Mayor and Council

The District of Lillooet is governed by an elected Council which consists of a Mayor and four (4) Councillors. A general election for all positions of Council is held every four years, with the most recent election being held on October 15, 2022; the next general election will be held in October of 2026.

The legal framework and foundations for all local governments in British Columbia is set out in the Community Charter and the Local Government Act, which provide Councils the necessary powers and discretion to address existing and future community needs, the authority to determine the public interest in their community within the established legislative framework, and the ability to draw on financial and other resources that are required to support community needs.

Council has the authority to enact and enforce bylaws and policies that relate directly to community needs, and to collect taxes and fees to fund those activities and services. Council is ultimately responsible for establishing policies, for carrying out those policies, and for the overall administration of District business.

Council meets regularly to make decisions about District policies and directions that are carried out by District staff in the day-to-day business of the community. All decisions of council are expressed by either a resolution or a bylaw. The District encourages everyone to attend council meetings to share your views and to learn more about the decisions that impact you, as residents of the community.
