Chilcotin River landslide information

Overnight between July 30-31, a landslide occurred near Farwell Canyon in the Cariboo Regional District. This event has blocked the Chilcotin River, creating a lake that extends several kilometers upstream. The landslide also affects the Fraser River, and the situation remains dynamic with potential impacts for downstream communities, including the District of Lillooet.

The Province of British Columbia has released computer models showing possible outcomes if the debris dam releases water. In the worst-case scenario of a rapid dam collapse, peak water flows near the landslide would be much higher than usual spring levels. However, downstream flows in the Lillooet area are expected to be lower than typical spring peak levels. While catastrophic flooding is not currently predicted, the water release could cause flooding in low-lying areas and carry dangerous debris and sediment. For your safety, please avoid areas around the Fraser River.

The timing and manner of water re-entering the Chilcotin River are uncertain and could happen at any time. The Province is actively monitoring the situation around the clock and will continue to update the public as new information becomes available. Computer modeling and risk assessments are ongoing and may change throughout the day.

Please stay away from the Chilcotin River and Fraser River and follow directions from local governments and First Nations. For the latest emergency information, visit www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca.
