PUBLIC STATEMENT

RE:  Findings at Kamloops Residential School

We are shocked and devastated to hear of the discovery announced on May 27 at the former Kamloops Residential School.

One cannot imagine the horror experienced by these children and their families during that terrible period of our history. Only the survivors and their families can, of which we have many in our communities.

To our St'át'imc communities and all Canada’s First Nation communities across the country, and those survivors, we offer our sincere regrets, apologies, and condolences. The District of Lillooet extends its support to our Indigenous neighbours during this time of grief.

There is an adage that “Time heals all wounds”. This is not true. Time can also diminish remembrance. We will not forget.

Our flag will be at half mast for 215 hours in respect for our friends and neighbours of First Nations communities.

On behalf of Council and staff,

Peter Busse, Mayor
District of Lillooet
